Quebec legal warranty on Shopify: how to show the warranty of good working order next to your prices
Since 5 October 2026, new appliances, TVs, computers, tablets, phones and game consoles sold to consumers in Québec come with a legal warranty of good working order of 3 to 6 years, and merchants must show its duration next to the advertised price. This guide explains what Québec’s Consumer Protection Act and its regulation require, which products and durations apply, and how to show the warranty on Shopify.
In short
- The warranty is set out in sections 38.1 to 38.9 of the Consumer Protection Act, added by S.Q. 2023, c. 21 (Bill 29). The durations are in section 79.21 of the regulation adopted by Décret 1459-2025.
- It applies since 5 October 2026, to new goods sold or leased long-term to consumers.
- The merchant must show the duration near the advertised price, in a way that is obvious (section 38.8).
- Durations: 6 years for stoves, fridges, freezers, air conditioners and heat pumps, 5 years for dishwashers, washers and dryers, 4 years for TVs, 3 years for computers, tablets, phones and game consoles.
What the rule requires
Bill 29, the law against planned obsolescence, added a legal warranty of good working order (“garantie de bon fonctionnement”) to the Consumer Protection Act. In plain words:
- Certain new goods sold or leased long-term to a consumer come with this warranty (section 38.1).
- It covers parts and labour (section 38.2). It does not cover normal maintenance, damage caused by misuse, or accessories other than those set by regulation (section 38.3).
- It starts when the good is delivered (section 38.4). The merchant or the manufacturer pays reasonable shipping costs for a repair under the warranty (section 38.5), and it also protects a later buyer of the good (section 38.6).
- The merchant must indicate the duration of the warranty near the advertised price of the good or, for a long-term lease, near its retail value, in an obvious way (section 38.8).
- After the sale, the merchant must send the consumer the information set by regulation (section 38.9). Manufacturers must publish the duration online in an obvious and understandable way (section 79.22 of the regulation).
Covered products and durations
Section 79.21 of the regulation sets these durations:
| New good | Duration |
|---|---|
| Stove, refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, heat pump | 6 years |
| Dishwasher, washing machine, dryer | 5 years |
| Television | 4 years |
| Desktop computer, laptop computer, tablet, cell phone, video game console | 3 years |
Only new goods are covered. Accessories are not covered unless a regulation says so, and the regulation adopted by Décret 1459-2025 does not name any.
Who is affected
The duty to show the duration is on the merchant (“commerçant”) who sells or leases these goods to consumers. Manufacturers have their own duty to publish the duration online. The sections cited in this guide do not set a separate rule for stores based outside Québec. If you sell to Québec consumers from elsewhere, ask an adviser how the Act applies to you.

What exactly to show, and where
- The duration of the legal warranty of good working order for that product, near its advertised price, in an obvious way.
- Online: for contracts concluded at a distance, the merchant’s written offer must include the duration of the warranty, and must indicate it near the advertised price (section 54.4 of the Act).
- Every price: the Act links the duration to the advertised price, so think of every place where you show the price of a covered product, such as product pages, collection pages and search results.
The Act does not prescribe exact wording for the line next to the price. The app uses the official term in French, “Garantie légale de bon fonctionnement”, followed by the number of years, with English below it.
If you also sell extended warranties
Before offering a paid extended warranty on a covered good, the merchant must tell the consumer verbally about the legal warranty and its duration (section 228.2), and give a paper document with the mandatory notice (section 91.9 of the regulation). The consumer can cancel an extended warranty within 10 days. If the merchant did not show the duration as section 38.8 requires, that period becomes one year (section 228.3).
How to do it on Shopify
Doing it by hand
You would go through your catalogue, decide which products are covered and what duration applies, then add the warranty line to each product, for example with a product metafield that your theme shows under the price. To show it on collection and search pages as well, the product cards in your theme need the same change. New products have to be checked one by one.
With PREPA: Quebec Warranty
- Reads your product titles, types and tags and suggests the Québec category and duration for each covered product. Accessories and used items are left out.
- Shows the duration under the price on product pages, and next to prices on collection and search pages.
- Shows French first with English, follows your storefront language, or shows French only.
- Opens the official French notice with the table of durations in one click (“En savoir plus”).
- On the paid plan, checks new products automatically when you create them.
Set up the app in 3 steps
Install the app and open it from Apps in your Shopify admin. A guided setup opens.
- Choose the covered products
When the step opens, the app reads your product titles, types and tags and suggests the Québec category and the legal warranty period for each covered product. Click “Save as suggested (N products)”. To check first, open “Check or change the list”, change a category if a suggestion is wrong or choose “Not covered” to leave a product out, then click “Save N changes”.
- Show it in your store
Click “Turn on in theme”. Your theme editor opens with the “Québec legal warranty” app embed already switched on. Click Save at the top right, then come back to the app. The step is ticked automatically.
- Check new products automatically
Optional, on the paid plan. Turn on “Check new products automatically”. When you create a new product, the app checks it and shows the warranty if it is covered.
A covered product now shows “Garantie légale de bon fonctionnement : N ans” below the price, with “En savoir plus” for the official notice. The app only suggests; you decide which products are covered. Every setting is explained on the help page.
Important: This app helps you display the information. You remain responsible for which products are covered and for the accuracy of the information. This is not legal advice.

Which products are covered, and for how long?
New stoves, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and heat pumps: 6 years. Dishwashers, washing machines and dryers: 5 years. Televisions: 4 years. Desktop and laptop computers, tablets, cell phones and video game consoles: 3 years.
Where must the duration be shown in my online store?
Near the advertised price of each covered product, in an obvious way (section 38.8). For online sales, the written offer must include the duration near the advertised price too (section 54.4). The app shows it under the price on product pages and next to prices on collection and search pages.
Are used products and accessories covered?
No. The warranty applies to new goods. Accessories are only covered if a regulation says so, and Décret 1459-2025 does not name any.
When does the warranty start, and what does it cover?
It starts when the good is delivered. It covers parts and labour, but not normal maintenance or damage caused by misuse.
What if I also sell extended warranties?
Before offering one, you must tell the consumer verbally about the legal warranty and its duration, and give the paper notice required by section 91.9 of the regulation. The app does not handle that paper notice.
What happens if I do not show the duration?
Section 277 of the Act lists breaches of sections 38.7 to 39.7, which include section 38.8, as offences, with fines from $1,500 to $37,500 for an individual and from $3,000 to $75,000 in other cases. If the consumer bought an extended warranty, the 10-day cancellation period becomes one year (section 228.3).
My store is outside Québec. Does this apply to me?
The sections cited in this guide speak of merchants who sell to consumers and do not set a separate rule for stores based elsewhere. If you sell to Québec consumers from outside Québec, ask an adviser how the Act applies to you.
What does the app cost?
The Free plan shows the warranty on up to 25 products. The paid plan costs $0.99 per month or $9.99 per year, with a 14‑day free trial, and adds unlimited products and automatic checks for new products.
